Without installing any plugin, Gutenberg already lets you enable a lightbox-like effect. I recently found it hidden inside the link options in the toolbar—when turned on (Enlarge on click), viewers can click the image to zoom in. It doesn’t support navigating to the next or previous image yet, nor does it dim the background, but get the job done.
